The Impact of Cheap Natural Gas on Marginal Emissions from Electricity Generation and Implications for Energy Policy

چکیده
We use quasi-experimental variation due to the introduction of fracking to estimate the impact of a decrease in natural gas prices on marginal air pollution emissions from electricity producers. We find natural gas generation has displaced coal fired generation as the marginal fuel source significantly changing the marginal emissions profile. The impact of cheap natural gas varies across U.S. regions as a function of the existing stock of electricity generation. We demonstrate the impact of these changes on the environmental benefits of energy policy by simulating the installation wind and solar generating capacity in different regions around the U.S. We construct an hourly data set of potential renewable generation for both wind and solar power and combine that with our estimated marginal emissions. CO2 emissions offset by wind and solar power have fallen over most, but not all of the country due to cheap natural gas. JEL Classification: Q4, L5, Q5, H4

Marginal Life-Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Electricity Generation in Portugal and Implications for Electric Vehicles
This article assesses marginal greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of electricity generation in Portugal to understand the impact of activities that affect electricity demand in the near term. In particular, it investigates the introduction of electric vehicles (EVs) in the Portuguese light-duty fleet considering different displacement and charging scenarios (vehicle technologies displaced, EV charg...
متن کاملThe Effect of Abundant Natural Gas on Air Pollution from Electricity Production
We estimate the impact of large changes in the relative prices of natural gas and coal from 2005-2011, due primarily to “fracking,” on regional electricity marginal costs and air pollution emissions from electricity producers. We find strong evidence that natural gas is displacing coal as baseload. We estimate marginal emissions over the generation profile for each region in the U.S. using a no...
متن کاملMarket Based Analysis of Natural Gas and Electricity Export via System Dynamics
By increasing the extraction of natural gas, its role in the restructured power systems is being expanded, due to its lower pollution. Iran has the second largest reserves of natural gas in the world and exports it to different countries. This paper represents long run analysis of natural gas export from Iran to Turkey as a case study, considering direct transfer and exporting via the power mar...

Future energy systems and thus the climate are affected by many factors, such as energy resources, energy demand, energy policy and the choice of energy technologies. Energy systems of the future are facing three main challenges; the steady growth of global energy demand, the energy resource depletion, as well as the increasing emissions of carbon dioxide (CO 2) and other greenhouse gases and t...
متن کاملAnalysis the Impact of Hydro Renewable Energy on Electricity Prices in Iran Using a Long-Run Dynamic Model
The energy crisis in recent years has led politicians and major countries around the world to take energy issues differently from the past and replace fossil fuels with renewable energies, including hydroelectricity, to reduce and save energy, controlling supply and demand energy and reduction of pollutant emissions has been widely welcomed. Accordingly, the present study investigates the impac...
